{"id":22542,"date":"2025-04-07T12:01:35","date_gmt":"2025-04-07T10:01:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saarland-informatics-campus.de\/piece-of-news\/girlsday-2025-girls-dive-into-computer-science-at-the-saarbruecken-max-planck-institutes\/"},"modified":"2025-05-08T10:39:57","modified_gmt":"2025-05-08T08:39:57","slug":"girlsday-2025-girls-dive-into-computer-science-at-the-saarbruecken-max-planck-institutes","status":"publish","type":"sic_news","link":"https:\/\/saarland-informatics-campus.de\/en\/piece-of-news\/girlsday-2025-girls-dive-into-computer-science-at-the-saarbruecken-max-planck-institutes\/","title":{"rendered":"Girls\u2019Day 2025: Girls Dive into Computer Science at the Saarbr\u00fccken Max Planck Institutes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"c31529\" class=\"content content--textpic content--layout-0 has-no-header frame--default content--bg-none\">\n<div class=\"content__ct\">\n<div class=\"content__wrap\">\n<header class=\"content__hd\">\n<h2 class=\"p1\">On April 3, 14 girls aged 10 to 16 visited the Saarbr\u00fccken MPIs for Girls\u2019 Day.<\/h2>\n<\/header>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"c31545\" class=\"content content--text content--layout-0 has-no-header frame--default content--bg-none\">\n<div class=\"content__ct\">\n<div class=\"content__wrap\">\n<div class=\"content__bd\">\n<p class=\"p1\">The <b>\u201cGirls\u2019 Day \u2013 Future Prospects for Girls\u201d<\/b> is a nationwide initiative in Germany aimed at inspiring girls to explore professions in which women are still underrepresented, particularly in fields such as IT, engineering, natural sciences, and technology.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Once again this year, the Max Planck Institutes for Informatics and Software Systems in Saarbr\u00fccken supported this initiative. 14 girls aged between ten and sixteen visited the institutes, met inspiring female researchers, gained exciting insights into current projects, and took part in hands-on workshops.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Saarbr\u00fccken Max Planck Institutes have been participating in Girls\u2019Day since 2017. \u201cComputer science is a discipline that already has a significant impact on our lives \u2013 and will continue to do so even more in the future. That\u2019s why it is particularly important to get more girls excited about this diverse and creative field,\u201d says Dr. Anne-Katrin Schmuck, faculty member at the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems. Together with PhD student Abigail Pribisova, she gave the introductory welcome talk to the participants.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After some computer science-themed icebreaker games \u2013 including the \u201cTowers of Hanoi,\u201d the \u201cTravelling Salesman Problem,\u201d and a walk-through sorting algorithm \u2013 the girls took part in two workshops. Guided by Carina Schmitt and Christian Klein, they received an introduction to soldering and assembled their own binary clocks. In a second workshop, led by Pascal Hennen and Cristian Munteanu, they programmed an Arduino microcontroller and took apart old computers and smartphones to explore their inner workings.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">\u201cI especially enjoyed programming with the Arduino,\u201d said 16-year-old Melek, who took part in Girls\u2019Day for the third time this year. \u201cAfter finishing school, I want to study either dentistry orbusiness informatics.
