Five centers at universities and the DFKI form the network of German Competence Centers for Research on Artificial Intelligence. They represent the central core of the German AI research ecosystem, helping to ensure that this research remains visible on an international scale.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The network is an initiative of the Federal Government’s AI Action Plan aimed at strengthening Germany as a hub for the research, development, and application of AI in international competition. Special attention is given to the responsible and public welfare-oriented development and use of AI systems, which are intended to establish the hallmark of “AI Made in Europe.”<\/p>\n

On January 1, 2025, Prof. Dr. Antonio Kr\u00fcger assumed leadership of the scientific committee for one year. This role involves organizing the annual All Hands Meeting for the competence centers. Up to 300 scientists from these centers gather at this networking event, where they present their work through lectures and posters and discuss current issues related to artificial intelligence.<\/p>\n

Since July 1, 2022, the five university centers have been institutionally funded. The federal government allocates a total of up to 50 million euros annually for this purpose. The DFKI receives support from the BMBF of up to 11 million euros per year as part of future project funding.<\/p>\n
