A quick glance at the fully occupied rows of the G\u00fcnther Hotz lecture hall at Saarland University was enough to reach this conclusion. Around 250 teachers and students took part in the first “Day of Digital Education\u201c in the Saarland. The Ministry of Education and Culture, the Landesinstitut f\u00fcr P\u00e4dagogik und Medien, Saarland University and the HTW Saar – University of Applied Sciences jointly organised the training under the motto “Media Education and Informatics Education” on the Saarland Informatics Campus.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Minister of Education of the Saarland, Christine Streichert-Clivot, extended a greeting in the beginning of the symposium: “The new curriculum ‘Media Education and Informatics Education’ and the DigitalPakt Schule are important cornerstones for digital education in the Saarland. With the ‘1st Day of Digital Education’ we want to give impulses for its implementation in school. Everyone should benefit from the possibilities of digital education. That is why the exchange of expertise is important”, said the Minister.<\/p>\n

Renowned experts in the didactics of computer science were invited to the first Day of Digital Education on the Saarland Informatics Campus and addressed various aspects of digital education in lectures and workshops. Prof. Dr. Ira Diethelm from the Carl von Ossietzky University Oldenburg and Prof. Dr. Heidi Schelhowe from the University of Bremen were invited to speak. In the afternoon the participants of the conference had the opportunity to present and discuss experiences and challenges in digital education at a barcamp.<\/p>\n

The partners at the Saarland Informatics Campus support activities such as the first Day of Digital Education and are also involved in teacher and student education in a variety of ways. The Student Laboratory for Computer Science at Saarland University (InfoLab Saar), the annual Ursula Hill-Samelson Teacher’s Prize of Saarbr\u00fccken Computer Science, which is sponsored with 2500 euros, or participation in various events to promote girls in MINT subjects such as MentoMINT, UniCamp or Girls’ Day are just a few selected examples of the activities at SIC.<\/p>\n

Background Saarland Informatics Campus:<\/strong>
\n800 scientists and about 2000 students from 81 nations make the Saarland Informatics Campus (SIC) one of the leading locations for computer science in Germany and Europe. Five world-renowned research institutes, namely the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the Center for Bioinformatics and the Cluster for “Multimodal Computing and Interaction” as well as three networked departments and 18 degree programs cover the entire spectrum of computer science topics<\/p>\n
