During the Saarbr\u00fccken Research Days on Computer Science, young computer science talents from all over Germany have the opportunity to take a first look at computer science studies and to get to the bottom of current research questions together with students and scientists from Saarland University and the computer science institutes located at the university. Due to the corona pandemic, the \u201eSaarbr\u00fccker Forschungstage” were moved to the virtual world this year.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Saarbr\u00fccker Forschungstage take place regularly since 2008. This year, around 30 students between the ages of 16 and 19 are taking part. The students are successful participants in the second round of the German National Computer Science Competition (Bundeswettbewerb Informatik) and excellent high school graduates from all over Germany.<\/p>\n

“Despite the limitations caused by the corona pandemic, we were able to put together a varied virtual program,” says Professor Christoph Weidenbach from the Max-Planck-Institute for Computer Science, who is together with Markus Bl\u00e4ser, Professor of Computer Science at Saarland University and Ben Wiederhake, PhD student at Saarland University and the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, organizing the workshops offered. Besides some research workshops, the participants can also attend a virtual lecture on efficient programming and during a “Meet & Geek\u201c talk to Saarbr\u00fccken computer science students about studying at Saarland University.<\/p>\n

The Saarbr\u00fccker Forschungstage are held in close cooperation with Bundeswettbewerb Informatik with which they share the common goal of winning young people who are enthusiastic about computer science for the subject. The Bundeswettbewerb Informatik takes place annually since 1980 and is supported by the Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Informatik e.V. (GI), the Fraunhofer-Verbund IUK-Technologie and the Max-Planck-Institute for Computer Science. The competition supported by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.<\/p>\n

Background Saarland Informatics Campus:<\/strong>
\n<\/strong>800 scientists and about 2000 students from more than 80 nations make the Saarland Informatics Campus (SIC) one of the leading locations for computer science in Germany and Europe. Five world-renowned research institutes, namely the German Research Center for Artificial Intelligence (DFKI), the Max Planck Institute for Computer Science, the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, the Center for Bioinformatics and the Cluster for “Multimodal Computing and Interaction” as well as Saarland University with three departments and 21 degree programs cover the entire spectrum of computer science.<\/p>\n
