Kevin Baum is the new head of the CERTAIN Centre for European Research in Trusted Artificial Intelligence
Launched in September 2023, the Center for Trusted Artificial Intelligence aims to develop innovative technologies that provide guarantees for trustworthy and reliable AI systems. At the same time, it acts as a point of contact in the Greater Region for partners from industry, standardization bodies, and political and social interest groups. Kevin Baum took over the management of CERTAIN on December 1, 2023.
Computer scientist and philosopher Kevin Baum is dedicated to complex technological, ethical, and social issues in the context of developing and implementing trustworthy artificial intelligence. As a member of several interdisciplinary project teams, he conducts intensive research in the field of trustworthy AI, particularly on the relationship between transparency, traceability, and explainability. These studies aim to improve the accountability of machine-supported decisions and algorithmic fairness. The lecture “Ethics for Nerds” at Saarland University, which he co-designed, was awarded the 2019 “Hochschulperle“ (University Pearl) by the Stifterverband.
Since the beginning of 2023, Kevin Baum has been Deputy Head of the newly created research department for Neuro-mechanistic Modeling (NMM) at DFKI, for which he played a crucial role in shaping and establishing. He will continue his work in this function.
“I am looking forward to making CERTAIN a central location for the development of application-oriented research for the benefit of society. We will actively build local, regional, and European networks and contribute to shaping AI practice at all levels,” said Baum.
Baum’s appointment as head of CERTAIN underscores DFKI’s focus on developing human-centric AI and as a place for research into reliable and trustworthy AI made in Europe.
