Numerical Mathematics

Brief overview of the research field

Numerical mathematics deals with the development and analysis of computer-aided methods for solving mathematical, application-oriented problems. The applications arise from practically all areas of natural and engineering sciences, from medicine to industry.
Examples include tomographic imaging; non-destructive material testing; solutions of differential equations for modeling physical, biological, or chemical phenomena; data analysis; and the optimization of processes in steel production.
This is a very multifaceted discipline, since it ranges all the way from basic mathematical research, through development of algorithms, to implementation in software.
The master’s programs in Mathematics and in Mathematics and Computer Science have emphases in this area. Some courses can also be chosen as electives in the Visual Computing master’s program.
