The Saarland Informatics Campus

Study, Research, and Careers in the Heart of Europe

2,000 students from 81 countries study in 21 informatics-related programs on the Saarland Informatics Campus (SIC) at Saarland University, within three established departments. More than 800 scientists, in two graduate schools and six internationally renowned research institutes, are researching the complete spectrum of informatics topics, thus particularly enriching the areas of IT security, artificial intelligence, visual computing, bioinformatics, and the Semantic Web – from the foundations to innovative applications.

The SIC works together with international corporations such as Google, Microsoft and Facebook, and supports numerous spin-offs through its IT Incubator (ITI) and IT-Security Incubator “Fusion”. Thus it acts as a driver for further industry, research, and development laboratories to locate in the area.
The full potential of the site is leveraged to generate scientific publications and win prizes, as well as to put forth patent applications and technological innovations. Thanks to its excellent expertise and competitiveness, joint success is guaranteed at the Saarland Informatics Campus.

Success through Team Spirit

With the founding of the Department of Computer Science through the Saarbrücken mathematics professor Günter Hotz, the cornerstone was laid in 1969 for the internationally renowned Saarland Informatics Campus. Since then, thanks to outstanding research accomplishments and team spirit, new research institutes have successively been established at the SIC, networking with the co-located informatics-related departments to form an outstanding campus for informatics research.

In 1988 the German Research Institute for Artificial Intelligence was established here, in 1990 the Max Planck Institute for Informatics was founded, ten years later the Center for Bioinformatics followed, in 2004 the Max Planck Institute for Software Systems, in 2007 the Cluster of Excellence and the Graduate School, then two years later the Intel Visual Computing Institute, and since 2011 the Saarland Informatics Campus has been home to the Center for IT-Security, Privacy and Accountability, the CISPA – Helmholtz Center i.G.

Country Check Informatics

The “Ländercheck Informatik”, published in May 2018 by the Stifterverband für die Deutsche Wissenschaft (Donors’ Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany), sheds light on the differences in computer science education at universities between the federal states. Saarland is described as a winner in the study, as it achieves top results in almost all categories.

Entrepreneurial Campus

To transform research results into products and licenses, all of the Saarland Informatics Campus institutes work closely with the state and federal entrepreneurial institutions. The Competence Center also makes businesses aware of opportunities for collaboration with scientists. The on-site IT Incubator (ITI) and IT-Security-Incubator “Fusion” help scientists to protect their ideas through patent applications, as well as make them usable for business and industry; they also encourage the founding of start-up companies to create new IT firms that provide numerous jobs in the region. This wide spectrum makes the campus highly attractive for top international companies.
