More than 42,000 people have taken part in a programming competition to combat the corona virus. Now the IT incubator of Saarland University and Max Planck Society is also counting on software and the creativity and determination of the people behind it. It is launching the “Ideas against Corona” competition and awarding the best IT solution with 10,000 euros. Even the losers win: Even their ideas are assessed by the Saarbrücken IT Incubator and thus have the chance to be supported as well.

In the online holiday programme of the student laboratory for computer science at Saarland University, “InfoLabSaar”, children from the age of ten learn how to use the graphical programming language Scratch and how to create their own computer game.

Knowledge about the exact corona infection figures is an important cornerstone for developing effective measures to contain the virus. However, inconsistent transmission channels, potential breaks in the transmission chain and a large number of actors involved make it difficult to transfer data quickly and accurately to key players. Here the “Infektionsmelde- und -informationssystem (IMIS)” offers a solution. Two master students of computer science at Saarland University are involved in the development.

Studying IT security and founding a company at the same time – this is what the master’s course “Entrepreneurial Cybersecurity” at Saarland University offers. In just four semesters, students develop an idea for starting a business in IT security and bring the first prototypes to market maturity. For the best ideas, start-up scholarships and appointments with investors are arranged. One example is the project “Watchdog for home networks” from the first graduating class.
